You may have heard: The misleadingly named Fairness to Pet Owners Act, which would require veterinarians to provide prescriptions for companion animal medications even if the client does not want one, has been reintroduced in Congress and is gaining momentum. This legislation is poorly conceived and unnecessary, as veterinarians already provide prescriptions upon request in accordance with state laws and the AVMA’s Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics.
Thank you to the thousands of you who have already written your lawmakers in opposition to this misguided legislation. If you’ve already written in, please ask your colleagues to do the same. If you haven’t, we encourage you to write your lawmakers and tell them why this legislation is bad for veterinarians, our patients and our clients.
